Sealants

When a patient wishes to protect their or their child’s back teeth from decay, Dr. Nitya Balan may recommend dental sealants in Cedar Park, Texas. The back teeth have deep grooves that make it hard to remove all of the food and plaque when brushing. A dental sealant is a thin coating of plastic that is painted on the chewing surfaces of your back teeth to protect them from tooth decay. Dental sealants are usually used on children and teens because the most cavity-prone years are from six to eleven. Adults can also benefit from dental sealants if they have no decay or fillings in their molars.

To apply sealants, your molars or premolars are cleaned thoroughly. Each tooth is dried and an absorbent material is placed around each tooth. Then our dentists apply an acid solution to the chewing surfaces to roughen up the teeth. This allows the sealants to have a strong bonding process. Your teeth will then be rinsed and dried again. Finally, the sealant material is painted onto the tooth enamel and a curing light is used to help it harden.
